The cause is military dwarves carrying backpacks. They load up some food when they go on duty, then when they get off duty they throw it in their room and it's counted as owned by them. Only workaround I've found so far is to forbid all backpacks. #4. BonPadre Dec 16, 2022 @ 5:23pm.

Syndromes can cause rot of various organs, including, say skin. Forgotten Beasts often will come with horrendous syndromes that will do things like cause body parts to rot on living dwarves. As long as there is no other significant damage, they can walk around with rotting body parts trailing miasma everywhere they go.
