The bike was great (except for the steering wobble) for about 2 weeks. Then on Memorial Day weekend I was adding some mile to get through the "break-in" (LOL) period so I could get the 1st service done.

Removing the screen on them can cause very real losses, depending on the model. That does NOT apply to the KLR. Same thing with air filters.
