The Horizon Walker is a close-range class, so melee is probably better damage-wise. Sword and board is the way to go IMO with dueling as it is the best mix of defense and offense. The Ranger has the same hit dice as a fighter, so that is not a problem. You do not need mobility as the distant strike ability does not provoke opportunity attacks ...Rogue is always a good multiclass for ranger! Cleric would also be a good choice, as would druid. Probably will want to wait until 11th level Ranger (for Distant Strikes, which really is the iconic Horizon Walker feature) for multiclassing, or 12th level for that ASI as a general rule for whatever you decide to dip into.
