Here's how the 3 colleges compare per the Swarthmore report: Life Sciences: Carleton- 5th. Amherst- 27th. Kenyon- 51st. Physical Sciences: Carleton- 3rd.Miami is better for business and offers engineering that is on par with Ohio, and OU has stellar journalism. So the admitted student profile for the school is inclusive of all majors. The admit rates are dramatically different. Colby accepts just 13%, while Kenyon College admitted 36% last year. If your interest is about the same for both schoools, then consider an ED app to Colby College & an RD app to Kenyon College. However, check to see if either school offers EDII as an application option.

Since the acceptance rate increases a lot for ED, I am considering switching one of my regular applications to early. Kenyon is my top choice and I really wanna go there. The five college consortium, of which Amherst College is a member school, provides both academic and social advantages. Social advantages are important when considering small schools. Carleton has St. Olaf nearby, Amherst has U Mass-Amherst,Smith, Mount Holyoke, and Hampshire college nearby, while Kenyon is truly isolated.
Bates campus is a bit compact while Kenyons is more expansive. After spending a weekend at Kenyon my son felt more comfortable with his decision to choose Bates. They are both excellent schools so you can’t go wrong really. I love the college confidential community, because everyone is thoughtful and helpful.
