I'm getting ready to start on a wooden stock on my m1a socom. I'm going to cut out the section for the scout mount and apply high heat epoxy coat under the handguard to keep it from cracking. will also reinforce it with fiberglass and then apply a 2nd epoxy coat followed by a heat foil 1mm from the epoxy to dissapate the heat.

Original M14 rifles had wood HGs until about Nov. 1960 when they changed to the sloted FG version. The biggest problem with commercial wood hand guards is they are oversized.
